I heard that people were listening Armando played by Cherry Duyns

‘I heard that people were listening’ is the title of the literary concert that Armando and Oleg Lysenko gave over two years. Writer, painter, sculptor, film and theater maker Armando read from his great oeuvre. Accordionist and bandoneonist Oleg Lysenko accompanied him, let music and literature merge into one another with master hand.

When Armando had to withdraw for health reasons, he felt that the planned tour should not be cancelled. He asked Cherry Duyns, his oldest friend and Heerenleed partner, to take over the honours. Cherry Duyns has added his story about their relationship to Armando’s prose and poetry: Eine Mecklenburgische Reise. A journey through Germany, a journey through Armando’s contemporary world. A tribute to one of the most prominent and versatile artists in the Netherlands.

Armando (1929-2018) was a contemporary uomo universale. He was an artist who expressed his ideas in many disciplines. Armando was a painter, draftsman, sculptor and etcher. But also writer, filmmaker, theater maker and until 2003 violinist. Armando grew up in Amersfoort during the Second World War. The war years determined his image of man and formed the source of inspiration for his artistic oeuvre. Armando’s fascination for the tragedy of man in an indifferent landscape is elaborated in many disciplines and motifs. Armando’s fascination for the tragedy of man in an indifferent landscape is elaborated in many disciplines and motifs. Armando reflects on the uneasy beauty of evil, the guilt of the landscape and time erasing traces of the past. Despite the heaviness of his themes and the melancholic keynote of his oeuvre, Armando touches a lighter, absurd, even humorous chord in his theater work, fairy tales and stories. Armando’s work has received many awards, he has received important prizes such as the Herman Gorterprijs, the Multatuliprijs, the VSB Poëzieprijs and the Gouden Ganzenveer. Armando is a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. His work is included in many museums and important private collections at home and abroad.
